Steve Spagnuolo fired, Saints switching to a 3-4 defensive front

SpagsJust days after writing an article proposing the idea that the Saints should switch to a 3-4 defensive front, the Saints must have agreed with the concept in a big way. Reports indicate that the New Orleans Saints have plans to switch to a 3-4 defense. In doing so, they have fired defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo after one season with the team. Spags is very fond of the 4-3 front, and the team figured he did not fit into what the team wanted to do defensively. Spags’ defense ranked 32nd in the NFL, and it was the worst defensive unit in franchise history in terms of yards allowed.

The news comes on the first day that Payton had a team meeting. It’s obvious he’s been thinking about this for quite some time. As Jeff Duncan (TP) points out, “It’s a bold move by the Sean Payton. Sends a message right away that 2012 won’t be tolerated.”

If you are curious about whether or not the Saints can run a 3-4, who would play where, or what a 3-4 defense even is, check out my column on the 3-4 alignment:

I expect Jon Vilma, who is owed $6.1 million in 2013, and was a poor fit when the Jets switched to a 3-4 (that’s the reason we got him cheaply), to be released. DT Sedrick Ellis, DE Will Smith are also candidates to get cut.
