Saints narrow down defensive coordinator search to two candidates

The New Orleans Saints have not wasted any time in their search to fill the team’s recent defensive coordinator vacancy. The Saints have narrowed the search down to two candidates who have exclusive experience with the 3-4 defense: Romeo Crennel and  Eric Mangini. Neither is a name to be overly thrilled about, as the great defensive coordinators are seemingly already with teams.

Mangini was actually coaching the Jets when they decided to switch to a 3-4, and he ultimately made the decision to trade Jon Vilma to the Saints because of Vilma’s struggles in the new system. He’s now working as an ESPN analyst on NFL Live and various other segments. Crennel was recently the head coach of Chiefs, but he was fired because he’s not suited for a head coaching job, as he’s had five of five seasons with losing records as a head coach. He’s a defensive-minded guy though, and his 3-4 defenses have had success before.

Crennel is reportedly the Saints primary candidate, but the team supposedly wants both candidates on their coaching staff. This makes sense primarily because you don’t want only one 3-4 oriented coach on the entire coaching staff. It also makes sense to get both because normally, when choosing a defensive coordinator between two prospects, the losing candidate will try to find work for another team. Mangini currently is not with another team; he’s been out of football for a year. Therefore, if the Saints lock up Crennel as the defensive coordinator, it wouldn’t rule out Mangini tagging along as a defensive consultant or defensive positional coach…

…That is, if Mangini wants to win a Super Bowl.

  1. Given Mangini’s remorse regarding the Patriot Spygate thing (he made what seemed to be a genuine apology in May) he may be hoping to get back to coaching–maybe working at ESPN ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. But it makes sense that Crennel, freshly out of his HC job, would be the preferred man.

I think it would be great to get them both. (Thanks Bill Parcells.)
