SAFETIES

1. Jairus Byrd (FS – BUF) – SIGNED a 6-year, $54M contract with the SAINTS! Mickey Loomis does it again: The Byrd is the word! The team was tight on cap space, but Loomis found a way to make room for player the Saints really wanted and desperately needed. Byrd also got the $9M-a-year deal he desired. Byrd, a 2nd round pick and 5-year starter for the Bills, is a rangy free safety that has shown the ability to play single-high, patrolling the deep middle of the field. Not only is Byrd perhaps the NFL’s best safety, he’s never had a bad season, and he’s just hitting his prime at the ripe age of 27. While Byrd is an average run defender (yet still a vast upgrade over what the Saints had), Byrd is quite the playmaker in pass coverage. No one has more interceptions than Byrd (22)  since he entered the league in 2009. Additionally, Byrd only allowed 1 TD in his coverage last season, and, in the past three years, he’s held opposing quarterbacks to abysmal QB-ratings – of 35, 56.9, 54.9 respectively – on passes intended in his coverage. He and the emerging SS Kenny Vaccaro should be one of game’s best safety duos, resembling the Earl Thomas / Kam Chancellor combo in Seattle. It’s an exciting move for the Saints, but it makes you wonder where the team is going to find the cap space to lock up Jimmy Graham, while filling major holes on the offensive side of the ball (namely at WR, RT and C), as well as addressing the cornerback position. Either way, this move can be summed up in one fact: Byrd has 12 INTs in the past 3 seasons. The Saints’ starting safeties during that time, Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper, had only HALF of that…COMBINED… WHODAT!
